Varsity 网球 Walks Away as CIF-SS Division 1 Runner-Up
"What made our team strong was the camaraderie that existed among the team as a whole.——伊莎贝拉. '20
It’s a feat in and of itself to make it to the CIF-SS Division 1 Finals for the first time in school history. But to do it with a young and relatively inexperienced group of players - that’s the true story of this year’s team.
With a roster comprised of five freshmen, 三个二年级的学生, 和五个下属, this year’s two senior captains had their work cut out for them. Never fearful, captains 伊莎贝拉B. 20和安娜P. '20 laid the groundwork for an unforgettable season.
"What made our team strong was the camaraderie that existed not only between each doubles team but among the team as a whole,”伊莎贝拉说.
One of Isabella's favorite moments of the season was at an early game against Crossroads.
"It was the first time I realized how bonded the team was. The courts were right next to Ocean Park in Santa Monica. The day was warm and beautiful and we had an ocean view from the courts. Not only did we win that day, but we spent a long time afterward giggling, rolling around on the grass while attempting acrobatic stunts, and making a human pyramid."
去年, the team won the 2018 Mission League Championship, so this year the team headed into the 2019 season eager to take their games to the next level.
The team played hard against some tough competition going 7-1 in league play, with strong performances at the league tournament by 阿里安娜年代. ’21 (1st Place Singles MVP) and 娜塔莉·K. ’23 & 卢Z. ’23 (3rd Place Doubles), before securing the Mission League Championship for the second year in a row.
With the goal to win a spot in the Division 1 Finals, the team did not disappoint.
“进入决赛, we knew that we needed to solidify our lineups so that we could get used them during our practices," says co-captain 安娜P. '20. "We created two different lineups that would be used depending on what teams we played, and made sure all the doubles teams got used to playing with their partners during practices."
With convincing wins over La Cañada, 贝克曼, and Aliso Niguel in the early rounds, the stage was set for an exciting semi-final matchup at home against Camarillo.
"It was definitely our closest match of CIF and every point counted. Our whole team was cheering and we had a bunch of super good come回来s which made the match really interesting,”安娜说.
The team refused to be denied, battling to an 11-7 victory and securing a spot in the Division 1 Finals against Corona del Mar at the Claremont Club.
"It was a very close match and our entire team was nervously watching the final two deciding matches," remembers 阿里安娜年代. '21. "The excitement and running onto the court when we won is one of my favorite on-court memories of the season."
In a close match that was neck and neck heading into the third round action, the team saw their season come to a close, walking away as CIF-SS Division 1 Runner-Ups. And while it’s not the outcome the team had hoped for, the bar has been set for seasons to come.
